About Reading Horizons

Program Questions

  • I have a child that is nine, going on ten years old. Since the Reading Horizons Discovery software is for ages 4-9 and Reading Horizons software is for ages 10 and up, which one should I purchase?
Both versions of the software (the version for younger students [Reading Horizons Discovery] and the version for older students [Reading Horizons—RH]) teach the same phonics strategies and skills; however, they are delivered differently to more appropriately address students’ ages and interests. For example, Reading Horizons Discovery employs games, clip art, and a leprechaun character to appeal to younger learners, while Reading Horizons was developed with a more “mature” audience in mind so as to avoid being condescending to older learners. For students whose ages are on the higher end for the Reading Horizons Discovery software and on the lower end for the Reading Horizons software, either version would be appropriate; however, it is important to consider your students’ interests, maturity levels, and needs in determining the version to which your students will best respond.
  • What is the minimum amount of time you recommend using the Reading Horizons program per week?
Naturally, the more time a student spends with the program on a consistent basis, the more obvious the results. We recommend using the program three times per week for 30 minutes per session. Of course, there is flexibility in this suggestion if that suggested amount of time is not feasible. As long as the program is used consistently with sufficient exposure, steady progress can be made.
  • Should I use direct instruction or software or both for my child/children?
Using a combination of both software (for individualized instruction and practice) and direct instruction in the classroom yields the most effective results; however, either one or the other can be used exclusive of the other successfully. Both the software and direct instruction independently provide explicit instruction in the method and appropriate amounts of practice to reinforce the skills learned.
  • My child has dyslexia. Will this program work for him?
Dyslexics need to have explicit phonics instruction that incorporates all the sensory inputs and motor outputs simultaneously (hearing, saying, seeing, writing) during said instruction and reinforced through guided and individual practice. Discover Intensive Phonics and Reading Horizons both utilize these tactics making these programs especially effective for those with Dyslexia.
