Reading Horizons v5 Teaching Vocabulary Tool

Watch the Teaching Vocabulary Section Walkthrough Video

Reading Horizons v5 boasts a vocabulary database of over 10,000 terms to help students develop vocabulary and decoding skills simultaneously. The teaching Vocabulary tool may be accessed at any time and contains vocabulary relating to the skills that are being learned in the lesson. Students click the vocabulary button related to a specific lesson and are then able to view the number of words they have decoded from that list, and also what is required.

  • Student participation in the Vocabulary section is dependent on the student’s performance in the lessons and options that have been set by an administrator.
  • Students who perform poorly in the adjoining lesson will be required to complete more vocabulary. To view the list of associated words, they click the “Show Words” button, and the word list is displayed.
  • Words are organized as High Frequency, More Words, Nonsense words, and potentially some additional English for Special Purposes lists which include terms that fall into 5 categories: school, business, medical, hospitality, and travel.

The English for Special Purposes lists can be enabled by an administrator. In the vocabulary section, words are pronounced, defined, and used in sentences. Alternative forms of the word are shown, and offer an additional sentence showing how that form is used in context. Many words are also illustrated with a corresponding graphic. The student will phonetically decode each word, as well as pronounce and optionally record it in order to compare their pronunciation with the narrator’s. Students actively mark words to become familiar with likely and unlikely sequences of letters and to learn how to break words into syllables.

Foreign language support is offered where enabled by an administrator. The Recent Words list displays at a glance all of the words recently completed by the student. Students may also use the search feature to find words in the database that interest them to help expand vocabulary and understand how words are decoded. This tool can be highly useful when teaching vocabulary to many types of students.
