The roots of Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself are grounded in an intensive, explicit, systematic phonics program crafted in the early 1970's by educational professional Charlotte Lockhart. Ms. Lockhart, a former elementary instructor and principal, created the original Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself curriculum in response to students' poor reading performance in her school's reading programs. By tutoring students in her office daily and employing Orton-Gillingham-based techniques that incorporated multi-sensory, high-kinesthetic/verbal/visual learning cues, Lockhart was able to quickly teach her students how sound and letter relationships create words. Young students learned to read and spell and lives were changed.

Charlotte first published the program in the 1970's in response to the tremendous feedback she had received from peers who had witnessed her ability to change lives through effective literacy instruction. Reading Horizons partnered with Ms. Lockhart to publish software to accompany her breakthrough methodology and direct-instruction materials. In 2001, Reading Horizons acquired the Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself copyright from the Lockhart family. Since that time, we have been uniting all of the components used to teach Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself under one publishing umbrella. This union has given us the ability to innovate new advancements and focus on the needs of administrators, teachers, parents and students worldwide. Our goal is to provide a dynamic, successful way for people to reach beyond their bounds and discover new horizons by learning to read.
